Arunachal Pradesh Governor V Shanmuganathan and Chief Minister Pema Khandu today conveyed greetings and good wishes to the media fraternity in the state on the eve of National Press Day.
Shanmuganathan said that the day's celebration would instill new zeal and passion amongst the members of the fourth estate.
"It (media) has a constructive role to play for the society as mouthpiece of social issues. Therefore, it is of paramount importance that for a better and healthier society, the freedom of press must be respected while the press media also maintain ethics," the Governor said.
Shanmuganathan also hoped that the celebration would encourage the media in the state to continue to build stronger, healthier and more peaceful societies.
"This is a day to recognise and acknowledge the contributions of the media in development and evolution of our state," Khandu said in his message.
He said the press persons in the state despite several hurdles, have been working day and night to keep people informed and create opinion through their writings, reports, films and documentaries.
"Let us thank them for their role in our daily lives on this day," Khandu said, adding the press has a major role in upholding the principles of justice, peace and communal harmony.
He also greeted the Press Council of India on the completion of its 50 years in service to the nation.
"Since its inception on November 16, 1966, the Press Council of India has come a long way and proved its worth as a moral watchdog to ensure that not only the press maintain high standards expected from it but also that it is not fettered by influence or threats of any extraneous factors," Khandu said.
"I place my appreciation to Press Council of India for efficiently guiding the Press of the country in maintaining these principles," he added.
