Cheering the strong sales figure, shares of Ashok Leyland surged 9.17 per cent to Rs 58.30 -- its 52-week high in intra-day trade and finally ended at Rs 57.85, up 8.33 per cent on the BSE.
At the NSE, it closed 7.96 per cent higher at Rs 57.65.
Tracking gains in the stock, the company's market value went up by Rs 1,267.4 crore to Rs 16,463.40 crore.
In terms of volume, 67.44 lakh shares of the company changed hands at the BSE, while over 4 crore shares were traded at the NSE during the day.
The company had sold 6,275 units during the same month of 2013, Ashok Leyland said in a statement.
Sales of medium and heavy commercial vehicle during the month went up by 85.34 per cent to 7,210 units from 3,890 units sold in the year-ago period.
Sales of light commercial vehicles in December 2014 dropped by 12.78 per cent to 2,080 units from 2,385 units sold in the same month a year ago.
