Assam clashes: 11 arrested; night curfew to continue

Night curfew will continue in the area even as 11 persons were arrested for their alleged involvement in Sunday's clash between a cultural troupe and some youths near a highway in Bihgiri of Sonitpur district, police said.
Altogether 11 persons have been arrested so far in this connection that took place on Sunday night, Sonitpur Deputy Commissioner Lalit Gogoi said.
The curfew will continue from 5pm even though the situation is under control, he added.
Yesterday, police lathicharged and fired teargas shells to disperse mob that had destroyed many dwelling units of a particular community and set ablaze the house of the prime accused who, along with others, had fought with a Bihu team on their way to Tezpur after a cultural show Sunday night.
Curfew was imposed in the area near National Highway 15 in Bihaguri from yesterday noon for an indefinite period.
A Bihu party of Pasnoi area was on its way towards Tezpur for performing there.
When they halted at Bihaguri market for some time, the team got involved in a quarrel with a group of youths, resulting in serious injuries to some members.
This morning, protesting against the incident and alleged bias of the police in apprehending the culprits involved, locals vandalised many houses of those accused.
