"The government of Assam has constituted a One-Man Inquiry Committee to probe into the alleged suicidal deaths of farmers in the state since 2001 till date," an official release said.
The committee is headed by Additional Chief Secretary (Agriculture) V B Pyarelal, it said.
Pyarelal will submit his report within 30 days from the date of issue of the notification, which was yesterday.
"It may be mentioned that it has been brought to the notice of the government by media reports that 3,908 farmers have allegedly committed suicide in Assam since 2001," the statement said.
"Along with probing into any other matter relevant to the inquiry, the Committee will also suggest preventive measures to avert such recurrence if such incidents have taken place," the release added.
