The Assam government is keen on bridging the gap between the police and public to strengthen the law and order situation in the state, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said on Monday.

The state government has taken up a new project to revamp police stations across the state with advanced amenities and special provisions for common people, especially women and children, he said.

The new project - Mission for Overall Improvement for Responsive Image (MOITRI) - is aimed at making the force more responsible and responsive to public, Sonowal said, while inaugurating a police station at Azara near here.

"Altogether 346 police stations would be reconstructed at an estimated cost of Rs 2 crore in five years. In the first phase, 73 police stations have been earmarked under the scheme," the chief minister said.

Appreciating the role played by the Assam Police in steering a "relentless anti-corruption drive", the chief minister said the force has been successful in winning people's confidence with everyday efforts.

"They (police) must work to sustain the image, maintain a positive attitude and keep their morale high in all circumstances," the CM insisted, urging the officers to extend all possible support to people during distress.
