Assam ranks 2nd in employment growth

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today said the state government's thrust on employment has yielded dividends with Assam occupying the second position in terms of percentage of growth in employment among top ten states and Union Territories.
As per the provisional results of the Sixth Economic Census released by the Union Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) on July 30, Assam was placed at the second position in terms of percentage of growth in employment at 78.84 per cent as against the national average of 34.35 per cent.
Rural Assam accounts for 85.55 per cent growth in employment while urban areas account for 65.11 per cent, said a spokesman at Chief Minister's Office (CMO) here.

Attributing the percentage of growth in employment to the government's thrust on job creation, Gogoi said, "Despite various problems, Assam has been able to do well on the employment growth front. This augurs well for the state."
He said that besides development activities, particularly in backward areas, employment generation would continue to be the thrust area for the government.
Assam also occupies the third place in terms of percentage of growth in number of establishments among the top ten states and Union Territories at 100.17 per cent behind Manipur (109.37 per cent) and Sikkim (102.92 per cent) against the national average of 41.73 per cent, the spokesman said.

Manipur at 83.29 per cent tops the list of percentage of growth in employment followed by Assam, Sikkim, Uttar Pradesh, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand, Gujarat and Rajasthan.
