An Assamese dictionary for Science and Technology terms with over 40,000 words was released by Dibrugarh University Vice Chancellor Dr Alok Kumar Buragohain today.
The 1,160-page dictionary covered almost all streams of science, including Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology, Mathematics, Geology, Geography, Computer Science, Statistics, Astronomy among others, Dr Buragohain said releasing the book at the Dibrugarh University.
Dr Devabrata Sarma, Chief Editor of the Bigyan-Prajuktir Jatiya Abhidhan claimed that the dictionary which is the first one to be published in Asamese, aims at making scientific terminology and the complex orthography simple and easily understandable by the people.
"Efforts have been made to explain scientific terms, which are easily understandable by students in particular. In doing so, the orthography (conventional spelling system) of Assamese script has also been simplified", said Dr Sarma, Principal of Jorhat College.
"It is to be noted that the Assamese script has besides the vowels (swarabarnas) and consonants (byanjan-varnas), more than 450 amalgamated letters (juktaksars), thus taking the total number of glyphs (letters, signs and symbols) to 878", said Sarma.
He also spoke about his earlier four-volume Assamese dictionary, Asomia Jatiya Abhidhan dictionary, with an entry of two lakh words in 4,700 pages collected from all possible written (from ancient to modern) and oral sources used in all the dialects of Assamese (Kamrupi, Goalparia etc), besides selected words from tribal and ethnic languages.
Prof Bhim Kanta Boruah of Dibrugarh University's Assamese Department described the Science and Technology dictionary as a milestone in development of Assamese language.
Boruah said use of a language imbibing new words assures its continuation and development.
