The National Green Tribunal has issued bailable warrants against medical superintendents of 12 hospitals here for failing to appear before it on a plea seeking implementation of rain water harvesting systems (RWHS).
A bench headed by NGT chairperson Justice Swatanter Kumar issued the warrants against medical superintendents of Shanti Mukund Hospital, Metro Hospital and Cancer Institute, Sundar Lal Jain Charitable Hospital, Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute and Research Centre, Deen Dayal Upadhya Hospital, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, Rockland Hospital, MGS Super Specialty Hospital, Bensups Hospital, City Hospital, Deepak Memorial Hospital and Kukreja Hospital and Heart Centre.
"These hospitals have incorrectly claimed that they have installed rain water harvesting systems and the systems are functioning effectively. They were inspected by the inspecting team and found to be non-compliant even resulting in issuance of show cause notice for which they have not responded and they have not even cared to be present before the Tribunal...
"Consequently...We issue bailable warrants against medical superintendents and directors of the hospitals in the sum of Rs 10,000...," the bench said.
It also issued notice to them to show cause as to why they not be directed to pay compensation for polluting the ground water and for not complying with the laws.
The tribunal was hearing a plea by Vikrant Kumar Tongad seeking directions to Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) to "install proper rain water harvesting system" at all its existing as well as proposed and under-construction stations, tracks and depots.
Tongad had submitted that if rain water harvesting system is properly installed at all stations, tracks and depots of DMRC, about 6.37 crore litres of water can be saved.
