Bandh almost total in Coimbatore, Tirupur, Nilgiris

The bandh over Mekedatu dam issue was almost total in Coimbatore, Tirupur and Nilgiri districts with traders and retailers downing their shutters, responding to the call given all major political parties and farmers' associations, affecting tourism activities in Nilgiris.
Buses, both Government and private, and also sizeable number of autorickshaws and taxes were seen plying, across these districts, police said.
In Coimbatore district, almost all the shops and good number of industrial units were closed in support of the bandh in the city and Pollachi. Buses were plying as usual, they said.
In nearby Tirupur, nearly 90 per cent of textile units were closed and traders also downed their shutters, hitting the normal life, since majority of the nearly four lakh workers were coming from outside the district.
Shops were closed in Gudalur, Udhagamandalam, Kothagiri and Coonoor in Nilgiris District, hitting the tourist activities.
Even tourist inflow, particularly from Karnataka and Kerala was very thin, they said.
Buses coming from Karnataka have not crossed Tamil Nadu border from all the districts, police said.
So far no untoward incidents reported from any where, they claimed.
Meanwhile, a Cuddalore district report said wind screens were of one Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation bus proceeding to Bengaluru was damaged when miscrean penlted stone on the vehicle. However, no passenger was injured, police said.
The bus later stopped the service as per the instruction of the police.
The functioning of Neyveli Lignite Corportion was not affected due to the bandh.
