Banks opens over 11 cr zero balance accounts under PMJDY

Banks have opened more than 11 crore accounts under the ambitious financial inclusion scheme Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojna (PMJDY) and have collected about Rs 9,031 crore through these accounts.
As of January 16, 11.43 crore accounts were opened by banks across the country. Of this, 8.24 crore accounts had zero balance.
Public sector banks alone opened 9.06 crore accounts, followed by regional rural banks which opened about 2 crore accounts. 13 private sector banks together open just 36 lakh accounts.
Banks have achieved the target set by the government to open 10 crore accounts under the PMJDY scheme a month before the January 26 deadline.
Banks were asked to open at least one account of adult member in every household.
Banks have issued 9.83 crore RuPay Cards as on January 16.
Of the total, 6.80 crore accounts were opened in rural areas while remaining 4.62 crore were opened in the urban locations.
There are various benefits through PMJDY like RuPay Debit Cards with Rs 1 lakh accidental insurance to all the account holders.
Overdraft of Rs 5,000 to one member of family, preferably a woman, will also be provided after observing satisfactory transactions in the account for six months.
Besides these, other need-based credit facilities, micro insurance and so on will also be available to the customers.
