The 41-year-old star will play Frank, who is a demanding father and a member of the last generation of the Romany Gypsy community, known for their ability to fight, reported Variety.
"I was immediately drawn to Mikey's courageous and heartbreaking story. And his father Frank is unlike any character I've played before.
"He's a complex man torn between tradition and his love for a son struggling to come to terms with an identity that's completely at odds with Frank and his culture," Cumberbatch said in a statement.
Morgan Matthews will direct, while Dee Koppang O'Leary and Kevin Loader will produce the film.
Production on the movie is scheduled to start next summer.
