Famous Bengali sweets of Banchharam would be made available in the USA next year, a company official said today.
"After our visit to an investment summit in Washington DC in March, we have decided to start our presence in the US market by exporting our sweets. We have already spoken with distributors," Banchharam Food Products director Subhajit Ghosh told reporters here.
He said that their market survey had shown that there was lot of scope for authentic Bengali sweets.
The sweets would be made in accordance to the stringent US Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) norms from its plant in West Bengal for export to different parts of America.
"By the beginning of 2016 we will start exporting," Ghosh said.
Banchharam, which has 14 stores in Kolkata and three in Bangalore, also has plans to open outlets and even start making sweets at a later stage in the US.
"Our long term plan is to open our own standalone store there. Till then we want to sell in the US across departmental stores as packaged items. Places like San Fransisco, New York and Washington DC have a substantial Bengali population and so we are targeting them," Ghosh said.
US government's Select USA initiative to attract investment in the country is helping the sweet shop to expand overseas.
"Bengali sweets are available in the USA but the authentic Bengali taste is missing. Not only Bengalis, Indians and those from other parts of Asia, but even Americans are experimenting with food," the company director said.
