A bill was passed in the West Bengal Assembly today to restructure the Kolkata Improvement Trust (KIT) and the Kolkata Metropolitan Water and Sanitation Authority (KMW&SA) by amalgamating the two bodies with the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA).
The West Bengal Town and Country (Planning and Development) (Amendment) Bill, 2017, which was passed in the House by voice vote, was moved in House by the state's Urban Development and Municipal Affairs minister Firhad Hakim.
Speaking on the bill, Hakim was confident that the amalgamation of KIT and KMW&SA would help in better coordination and expedite development works.
The terms and conditions consequent upon the amalgamation was also being modified, the minister said.
Amalgamation of the two bodies would help avoid multiplicity of organisations and assist in equitable distribution of the assets and obligations of the two bodies with optimal utilisation of manpower, Hakim said.
To make the process effective, two existing Acts were today repealed in the House.
