He also said the Congress was subjected to a "media trial" over the perceived corruption in the allocation of 2G spectrum to telecom companies.
A special court in Delhi today acquitted former telecom minister A Raja and DMK MP Kanimozhi along with fifteen other accused and three companies in the case.
Chavan, who had served as the Minister of State in Prime Minister's Office during 20042010 before he was made chief minister of his home state, blamed the BJP for spreading "falsehood" on the issue.
He said the BJP's "false propaganda" and the "media trial" adversely affected the Congress' electoral prospects in 2014.
"The government (prosecution) could not provide any admissible evidence in the case before the court," Chavan said referring to the acquittal.
In an oblique reference to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's claim of a Pakistani hand in Gujarat polls, Chavan said, "the NDA government is still levelling false allegations against former prime minister Manmohan Singh without providing any proof and is misguiding the people".
