Civic body Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation today told the Bombay High Court that the proposed development control regulations provide for a "special parking authority" for Mumbai.
A division bench of justices N H Patil and G S Kulkarni was hearing a public interest litigation on traffic issues of the city.
There must be a law to regulate parking, just as there are laws to regulate street vending, the judges said.
"We need a special body, an authority under the law," said Justice Kulkarni.
BMC counsel Anil Sakhare said the Development Control Regulations for 2034, currently in the planning stage, make a provision for a special parking authority.
"It will have a statutory status. An IAS officer will head it," Sakhare said.
The court also said that electronic surveillance, which is proving effective to detect traffic rule violations, can also work for cracking down on illegal parking.
The hearing was adjourned to April 23.
