A 'bomb scare' spread panic at Manipal, about 60 km from here, for about three hours after local people heard a sound from a dustbin near a hostel and reported the matter to police.
Bomb detection squad, who rushed to the spot, found a Blackberry mobile phone inside the dustbin yesterday, police said.
The sound from the mobile phone was the ringtone of the mobile, police said. Later it was found that the mobile phone belonged to an MBBS student and he had already complained to police about his missing phone.
Police said how the phone landed in the dustbin was not yet known.
