DIG BSF R K Thapa today said that early this morning, the BSF troops deployed on duty in the area of responsibility of BOP Rattoke observed some suspicious movement across the fencing from Pakistan side.
"Later, the troops heard sound of something being thrown over the fence following which the sentry on duty immediately rushed towards the spot," the DIG said, adding, the troops at once challenged the Pakistani smugglers who opened fire at BSF personnel.
Later, during search of the area, troops recovered heroin worth Rs 25 crore, he said.
Notably, the ruling SAD had announced to hold sit-ins near the International Border "to create awareness about drugs" on January 5, while insisting that the Centre and BSF should seal international borders to check its inflow into the state.
The three "awareness" dharnas have been proposed to be held near the Attari, Hussainiwala and Sadki check points in Amritsar, Ferozepur and Fazilka districts respectively.
