Incumbent Chairperson Rani Singh Nair today retired from service after being at the top post for three months, after she took over on August 1.
Chandra, a 1980-batch officer of Indian Revenue Service (Income Tax cadre), is at present working in the board as Member (Investigation).
The officer is credited with getting the I-T department success under the one-time black money window, also known as the Income Declaration Scheme (IDS), that ended on September 30 and as per official figures, 64,275 declarants disclosed Rs 65,250 crore of hidden income under it.
An IIT graduate, Chandra will be in office till May next year.
CBDT has six members apart from the chairman, and is responsible for framing policy and administrative issues related to direct taxes and the Income Tax department.
