A teenage girl committed suicide by setting herself ablaze here after she was pressurised by six persons to withdraw a case of sexual assault against one of them, police said today.
The girl, a resident of Vijay Nagar here, poured kerosene and set herself ablaze on Thursday. She was immediately rushed to Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi where she succumbed to her burn injuries yesterday.
Following her death, scores of locals staged a demonstration in front of Vijay Nagar Police Station, demanding early arrest of six persons accusing them of abetting the suicide, police said.
The six are identified as Lovely Khan, his father M A Khan who works with the CBI, his mother Loveleen, sister Nasreen, their neighbour Zahida and one school principal Anita Vashishth, SHO Vijay Nagar, Hari Dayal Singh Yadav said.
According to a complaint filed by the parents, the girl was provoked to commit suicide as the accused repeatedly pressurised her to enter a compromise in a criminal case filed by her against Lovely Khan and four other accused.
Explaining the sequence of events, Yadav said, on March 27, 2014, the class 10th student was going to a cyber cafe in the locality when Lovely Khan along with four other boys kidnapped her in a car and took her to a forlorn plot and attempted to assault her.
When she resisted, they were infuriated and thrashed her badly after which she was thrown in Lal Quan area.
Upon complaints of her parents on April 30 last year, an FIR was registered at Vijay Nagar police station against Khan and four other boys. Khan was arrested the next day and sent to jail, Yadav said.
Since then, the accused were mounting pressure upon the girl to withdraw the case and make a compromise outside court.
Upon complaint of the parents of the girl, an FIR has been registered under section 306 IPC (abatement of suicide) against the six, the SHO said.
