Maharashtra's Minister for Water Supply and Sanitation Babanrao Lonikar said here today that the state government will float a Chief Minister's Rural Water Supply Scheme to solve water shortage in rural areas.
Addressing a press conference here, Lonikar said that different water schemes will be clubbed together and relaunched as a new scheme known as the Mukhyamantri Gramin Pani Purvatha Yojana, which would be allotted Rs 1,000 crore initially.
He said that Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Finance Minister Sudhir Mungantiwar have given their nod to the scheme.
The said that the earlier Congress-NCP government had sanctioned construction of a weir at Jalna for which Rs 500 crore was spent.
However, the concerned officials did not follow norms and spent Rs 100 crore on it and the project became unviable since it cannot retain water, due to which it is likely to be scrapped, he said.
