Coast Guard evacuates injured engineer off Mormugao port

An injured engineer on board a vessel was medically evacuated Wednesday by the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) off Mormugao Port, a senior official said.

The ICG received a message on Tuesday evening that second engineer Pavan Kumar Chahar, who was on-board the oil tanker MT Dawn Mansarovar, had injured his finger severely and needed medical evacuation.

"A message was received at about 7.30 pm on November 13 from the Captain of oil tanker MT Dawn Mansarovar regarding medical evacuation of Pavn Kumar Chahar, the Second Engineer who had his left hand's middle finger severely injured, which initiated the need for his medical evacuation on Wednesday morning," ICG Goa spokesman Commandant Akshay Jain said in a statement issued here Wednesday.

He said the vessel was then about 135 nautical miles off the Mormugao coast in Goa.

The Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre at Coast Guard District Headquarter Goa assessed the situation and called the local agent and the ship for further details.

"The local agent of the vessel informed that it was likely to arrive off the Mormugao Port at about 9 AM on November 14.

"Keeping the time of arrival of the vessel off the Mormugao Port and condition of the patient, it was decided that a tug from Mormugao Port Trust would be the safest way for disembarkation of the patient," said commandant Jain.

After the vessel reached off Goa at 8.30 AM, the patient was disembarked by the MPT tug and was shifted to hospital for further treatment, he said.
