Large tracts of coastal agrarian land were submerged during high tides in South 24 Parganas and East Midnapore districts of West Bengal this afternoon.
Official sources said thousands of acres of land in Gosaba, Patharpratima, Kultali, Kakdwip were inundated with saline water as the 'bundhs' gave way during the tides and sea water crept in through the creeks and rivulets.
The phenomenon is called 'Bhara Kontal' in local parlance.
In East Midnapore's Contai-Ramnagar belt, many coastal areas were similarly flooded.
The flooding would affect paddy cultivation.
