Union Human Resource Development Minister Smriti Irani today mounted a scathing attack on Congress, alleging its leaders extended support to those who wanted to destroy the nation ignoring the sacrifices made by the security forces.
"Congress did not think twice before standing by those who shouted slogans for destroying the nation ignoring the sacrifices made by our security forces in protecting the nation," Irani told an election meeting here in Karbi Anglong.
Security forces work hard and make immense sacrifices all over the country to protect the nation, she said, adding BJP would not allow a few to destroy the nation's unity.
Irani appealed to voters to bring BJP to power in Assam to ensure that "the country remains secure and united".
Women's status in the North East is high but it was during Congress rule that a girl was dragged on the streets of Guwahati.
She was referring to an incident in July 2012 when a teenaged girl was molested in full public view by a mob.
"Assam is famed all over the world for Ma Kamakhya but it is indeed shameful that women no longer feel secure to step out in the streets and crime against them are increasing the state," she said.
If voted to power, BJP will set up women police stations in each district, she said, adding presently there is only one women police station in the state at Panbazaar in Guwahati.

Irani alleged that the Congress government has failed to provide basic health facilities to the people who are forced to go to expensive private hospitals.
The BJP would provide fully-equipped ambulances and a super-speciality hospital in each sub-division of the state, she said.
Education and health lead to employment and empowerment and the Narendra Modi government has taken several initiatives including 'Start-Up India' to help youth start a business or get a job.
She said for the first time free books of NCERT from classes I to XII have been made available online and on mobile app. "Has the Congress government spread this information among the people so that they can avail the facilities?" she asked.
The BJP would also provide land documents to all farmers in the state after forming the government, Irani said.
Though there is flood in Assam, there is no clean drinking water or water for irrigation, she said, adding over 32,000 small-scale industries were closed down in the state.
Irani said the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre would establish a separate department of Tribal Philosophy of North East at Shillong's North East Hill University (NEHU) so that the entire world realises the richness of the region's philosophy, culture and social history.
The Centre will also bring out a special Hindi dictionary in 50 dialects of the country so that people can get connected as "language is the bridge to join people".
Irani also addressed two elections meetings at Howraghat and Nagaon today.
