The opposition Congress today announced that it would fight the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) election alone and would not have any tie-up with other parties.
"We are trying to revive our tribal base and have taken initiative to train tribal leaders for working among the tribals. We have not discussed with any tribal-based party regarding making any alliance and the matter was not even discussed in our party forum," Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC), President, Birajit Sinha told reporters.
In the last TTAADC elections held in 2010, the Congress had an alliance with Indigenous Nationalist Party of Tripura.
Sinha said 25 promising tribal leaders from each Assembly segments have been selected for a 3-day training programme under central leaders which would start here from February 21.
He alleged that the tribals were living in deplorable condition and have no homes to stay and food to eat.
The Left Front had swept the tribal council elections last time and secured all the 28 seats. In the 30-member council two seats are nominated by the state Governor.
Assistant General Secretary of INPT, Rajeswar Debbarma said the party would contest the elections, but have not opened dialogue with any party for fighting the elections together so far.
The election for the council is due in May, this year.
The TTAADC constitute two-third of the state territory and is the home to tribals who form one-third of the state population.
The council came into being in 1987 under sixth schedule of the constitution to safeguard the interests of the tribals.
