Alleged conman Sukash Chandrasekar, friend of budding actress Leena Maria Paul and an accused in a Rs 19 crore cheating case was brought here today, police said.
Chandrasekar, arrested by a Delhi police team in Kolkata last week, was brought here today by the city police in connection with cases pending in the city.
A college drop-out hailing from Bangalore, he had 16 pending cases -- eight in Tamil Nadu, six in Karnataka and one each in Kerala and Delhi, a city police release here said.
He and Paul are accused in the Rs 19 crore cheating case besides another case of duping of a businessman of Rs 62.47 lakh. The actress has already been arrested.
Police said Chandrasekar had conned many persons using various means including posing as an IAS officer from Karnataka and cheated them to the tune of many crores of rupees.
The tech-savvy accused used mobile and internet technology to lure the gullible victims such as sending emails and tricking callers through carefully selected numbers to make them seem as he was calling from elsewhere.
He had posed as a Karnataka IAS officer and convinced a couple from Chennai into depositing Rs 19.70 crore they had obtained as loan from a bank at Ambattur here with the promise of awarding a government contract for machinery, only to do away with the money later.
He and Paul used a similar modus operandi to con a city businessman to part with Rs 62.47 lakh who had also filed a complaint which led to the actress' arrest, they said.
Paul was arrested from a farmhouse in Delhi by a special team on May 28. Three others including Sukash Chandrasekar, were then absconding. Police recovered 80 watches and nine cars.
The couple was hiding in the farmhouse since May 12 to evade arrest. Their four personal security officers, including three ex-servicemen, were also arrested.
