A Goa Police constable who was arrested in connection with a murder case, allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself in the lock-up in the wee hours of today.
"Devidas Sinari, the constable committed suicide by hanging himself at Bicholim police lock-up," Superintendent of Police (North) Umesh Gaonkar said.
Devidas along with his elder brother Dattaguru were arrested last night after the mutilated body of Ratan Carol, a local vendor, was recovered from Shapora river yesterday, he said.
The brothers had earlier threatened Carol over a petty matter, Gaonkar said, adding they were booked under sections 302 (murder) and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence or giving false information) of the IPC.
The department has initiated an inquiry as Devidas's suicide has been considered as custodial death and probe is underway, the SP said.
