The agitating workers of the company, in-charge of constructing a tunnel between Chenani in Udhampur district and Nashiri in Ramban district, today blocked the highway near Chenani area for hours, disrupting movement of traffic, police said.
The company had reportedly sacked two workers after they came for duty in inebriated condition, following which a group of around 250 workers approached the organisation and demanded their reinstatement.
During the protest, the workers pelted stones at a police team that had been called by the company to avert any untoward incident.
To disperse the agitators, the police resorted to lathicharge in which a constable was injured.
A senior police official said that district administration is in talks with the workers to resolve the issue.
