A consumer rights organisation has urged the government to enact a new motor vehicle law in the winter session of Parliament to reduce road accidents which claim more than 400 lives daily.
In a memorandum, sent to Prime Minister Narenda Modi, Consumer Voice said the government should pass the Motor Vehicles Amendment Bill 2017 in the upcoming Parliament session and save 413 lives which are lost in road accidents everyday.
"Once the bill is cleared by the Rajya Sabha, it will ensure a new, stricter law which will help save precious human lives lost in road accidents every year," chief operating officer of Consumer Voice Ashim Sanyal told reporters here.
Dave Cliff, a global road safety expert, said if the government brought in a new law, India could achieve its goal of reducing fatalities by 50 per cent by 2020.
According to the Ministry for Road Transport and Highways' report "Road Accidents in India-2016" released last month, India saw 4,80,652 road accidents in 2016 in which 1,50,785 people were killed and 4,94,624 injured.
Everyday, as many as 1,317 road accidents take place in which 413 people are killed, it said.
The Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Bill 2017 was cleared by the Lok Sabha in the last session.
Consumer Voice is one of the leading consumer organisations in the India working under 'Jago Grahak Jago' programme of the government.
