Besides, the government has also decided to exempt all the vehicles owned by educational institutes or other private persons used for carrying students to schools or colleges or educational institutions from the liability of payment of road tax.
Stating this here today, Transport Commissioner Sumita Misra said that this decision would increase the number of vehicles used to carry students by granting contract carriage permits to them and to improve the financial viability of such vehicles.
She said that similarly, it would reduce the heavy burden of transport charges and to ensure the safer transportation of children and safety of other road users.
She said that all vehicles whether owned by schools or colleges or other educational institutions, or by any other private person, used solely for carrying children to schools or colleges or other educational institutions shall be granted contract carriage permit instead of the private service vehicle permit.
The special terms and conditions has been imposed while granting the Contract Carriage Permit to such vehicle so as to prevent the misuse of road tax exemption facility.
Misra said that three-wheeler auto rickshaws and other smaller vehicles such as motor-cabs, maxi-cabs etc. May also be issued contract carriage permits on the similar lines as bigger vehicles.
However, the area of such vehicles or permits may be restricted within the municipal limits and a perimeter of five km thereof, she said.
She said terms and conditions for granting contract carriage permit had been laid down and added that vehicle shall be used only in the specified area or on the specified route or routes.
