A vehicle owned by a sub-inspector was damaged in brickbatting by locals in Kosi town of the district when a police team had gone there following a tip-off that a girl who had eloped with a youth was present there.
According to DSP Atul Kumar Srivastava, the arrival of the police team in Nekasa Mohalla under Kosi Kalan police station was yesterday greeted with anger by the locals who engaged in brickbatting, causing damage to the vehicle owned by sub- inspector Satya Prakash Yadav.
Srivastava, however, denied claims being made in some quarters that the police team was beaten up. He also dismissed speculation that the sub-inspector's revolver was snatched during the disturbance.
"The private car of the sub-inspector has been partially damaged owing to brickbatting. However, it is not correct to say that the police party was beaten up or that the revolver of Sub-Inspector Satya Prakash Yadav was snatched.
"The situation is normal and efforts are on to recover the girl and nab the youth," added Srivastava.
Yadav, the in-charge of Sonkh police outpost, had yesterday gone to Nekasa Mohalla to recover a girl said to be in her teens who is alleged to have eloped with a youth from another community.
"Since the atmosphere turned a little tense, a police force was posted in the village as a precautionary measure," SP (traffic) Ashutosh Dwivedi, meanwhile, said.
"Two teams have been formed to recover the girl and nab the youth, who has been booked under Sections 363 and 366 of IPC," he added.
In another incident, a minor girl is last evening alleged to have eloped with two youths from Ambedkar Park under Vrindavan police station.
"One youth has been arrested while a hunt is on for the other along with efforts for the recovery of the girl," said Inspector VS Jaiswal.
