The incident occurred at around 12:30 PM when some police personnel heard sound of gunshots from the house of sub-inspector H. Chitti Babu, said an official attached to Dubbaka police station.
Police found Babu's wife Saroja lying in a pool of blood with a bullet injury to her head when they reached the spot, he said, adding that Babu fired the bullet from his service revolver.
Babu, who was critically injured after he apparently turned the gun on himself, was rushed to Hyderabad.
According to sources in Babu's family, he was under stress at work.
Further investigation is on.
