The policeman deployed in the Punjab Assembly premises, who was thrashed by some Congress MLAs on March 13, appeared before the Punjab SC Commission and narrated the sequence of events, besides seeking security for his family.
Head Constable Jai Pal of the Watch and Ward staff, who belongs to the SC community, recorded "the whole sequence of events leading to his assault," Commission Chairman Rajesh Bagha said in a statement today.
Five Congress legislators, protesting against police action at the CLP office, allegedly beat up Jai Pal and passed casteist remarks against him.
Following the scuffle at the Congress legislature party office in the Assembly complex, there was a ruckus inside the House leading to suspension of nine MLAs of the Congress.
The victim, in his detailed statement, said he was deployed on duty in the Assembly premises when the police on duty was informed that a girl had entered the premises in an unauthorised manner, Bagha said.
Jai Pal said while he was discharging his duties, some MLAs came charging and manhandled him.
"They also questioned him about his identity and his caste," Bagha's statement said, quoting the victim.
"The victim said when he told them (the MLAs) that he belonged to a poor downtrodden family and was from SC community, they snatched his identity card. On knowing his caste, they passed casteist remarks," the statement said.
Pleading stern action against the accused MLAs, Jai Pal requested the Commission to ensure that the justice is delivered without any delay.
