Legendary actor Soumitra Chatterjee says that he could not have survived in the industry for four decades if he just concentrated on appealing the masses.
"Had it been so, I would not have remained in the industry for more than 40 years," says Soumitra, whose scenes with late matinee idol and contemporary Uttam Kumer, in 'Jhinder Bondi' are still remembered.
Asked to comment on the notion that Uttam Kumar had more appeal for the masses while he was popular to discerning audiences, Soumitra smiles "Is it so?
"If anyone believes in that way, I don't know why," he said.
Soumitra, who had lip-synced the timeless Manna Dey number 'Hayto Tomari Janyo' in the classic 'Tin Bhubaner Pare', says "There are so many memories about Manna, and it is difficult to share any particular one.
"We understood each other and perhaps that showed during the song sequences," Soumitra added.
Soumitra, who is working in Anjan Dutta's new film, says the film's shooting has started.
"I can't talk about the role. But yes it has no resemblance to my character of a chronicler in 'Rupkatha Noy'," he said.
The actor adds that he had no problems in portraying roles matching his age.
