Admitting that those who had pelted stones at Leader of Opposition in Maharashtra Council Dhananjay Munde's car in Beed district earlier this year were yet to be identified, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis today said the NCP leader's security cover would be reviewed soon.
"We had deployed the necessary police security when Mundeji had visited Bhagwangad (in Beed district). There was a 20,000 to 25,000 strong mob that was present when the incident took place and thus the perpetrator of the crime has not been identified as yet," Fadnavis told the Legislative Council during the Question Hour.
Angry activists, reportedly belonging to a rival political party, had pelted stones at Munde's car and other escorting vehicles when they neared Bhagwangad for offering prayers at Bhagwan Baba's samadhi in January this year. Munde had escaped unhurt in the incident.
The activists had protested by raising slogans against Munde and asked him to go back as they did not want him to take darshan at the samadhi.
Munde had termed the incident as "pre-planned" and "politically motivated."
Fadnavis said that providing security to the LoP is the government's responsibility and that his security audit will be conducted within the next three days.
"I too have held various posts in my party as well as the state Legislature. But I have never even had a bodyguard for myself. Even after becoming the Chief Minister, I did not ask for security, but had to take a Z category cover as per norms," he said.
"LoP's security is the government's responsibility. Therefore, we will conduct an audit into his security within the next three days and increase his cover as per his threat perception," Fadnavis said.
