Accusing the ruling Trinamool Congress of letting loose a reign of terror in Bengal before the municipal polls, CPI(M) state secretary Surya Kanta Mishra today alleged the State Election Commissioner (SEC) was not acting impartially to ensure free and fair polls.
"The places where the Left has gained more votes in the last Lok Sabha bypoll, TMC has resorted to terror in those areas to stop free and fair elections. It is the duty of the SEC to ensure free and fair polls. They are partial towards the ruling TMC," Mishra told reporters.
Mishra accused the present SEC S R Upadhaya of playing into the hands of the TMC.
"TMC is trying to repeat what it did during the panchayat polls. The previous SEC stood up against those terror tactics of the TMC. But the present SEC is doing whatever the state government is saying," Mishra said.
The opposition parties including the CPI(M)-led Left Front and BJP have been demanding central forces to ensure free and fair polls. The Bengal government has said they have no objection to deployment of central forces during the polls.
