"We need to introspect why we came up with such a poor show. We lost deposit in Chowringhee and came third in Basirhat Dakshin. Although as per the Lok Sabha polls we had put up a good show in both the segments, yet it needs to be seen as to what should be done to rectify the debacle," CPI(M) state secretariat member Rabin Deb told PTI.
While the by-election to the Basirhat Dakshin seat was necessitated by the death of CPI-M's sitting legislator Narayan Mukhopadhyay, the CPI(M) failed to put up a fight and came third.
"The elections were held at a time when there is a massive polarisation, practised by TMC and BJP. A section of the electorate who thought that the BJP needs to be stopped went with the TMC and another section who thought that the TMC needs to be stopped, went with BJP as they are in power at the Centre," CPI(M) leader Sujan Chakraborty said.
