The Visakhapatnam chapter of the Confederation of Real Estate Developers Association of India (CREDAI) announced here today that it will stop all ongoing construction work from September 21 if the AP government failed to supply quality sand at affordable prices.
Speaking to reporters here CREDAI's Visakhapatnam Chapter Chairman K Rama Krishna Rao and CREDAI President G V V S Narayana said that the construction sector has been facing a series of problems due to non-availability of quality sand due to abnormal hike in prices.
They said that there has been no supply of sand by the sole distributing agency of the Andhra Pradesh government for the past two months.
CREDAI members said that against the demand of 1,000 truckloads of sand per day at Visakhapatnam, there has been a shortage of nearly 70 per cent, adding that sand shortage is exclusive to the city and its surroundings due to the lack of river beds.
Plenty of sand is available in neighbouring districts like East Godavari, Vizianagaram and Srikakulam but officials do not encourage supply of sand to Visakhapatnam, they said.
As against the earlier availability of a truckload of quality sand for around Rs 18,000, the present price is Rs 50,000 due to cess and transportation charges, they said.
If the government fails to resolve CREDAI's demand it will stop all ongoing construction work from September 21 and the protest until the government resolves the issue, they said.
