A special CBI court in Chennai has sentenced a Customs officer to two years of rigorous imprisonment after finding him guilty in a disproportionate assets case.
The officer, then Superintendent of Customs posted in Chennai, B Pugazhenthi has also been fined Rs 20,000.
A CBI spokesperson here said the agency had earlier registered a case on allegations that Pugazhenthi had abused his official position and acquired assets disproportionate to his known source of income.
"The investigation revealed that during the check period from January 2004 to November 2009 Pugazhenthi has acquired disproportionate assets, both movable and immovable to the tune of Rs 89,72,956 in his name and in the names of his family members and incurred an expenditure of Rs 45,80,974 as against his total income of Rs 70,91,059," the spokesperson said.
