The dacoits got into the train in groups after it left Puri last night at Malatipatapur, Sakhigopal and Delanga stations past midnight and attacked the passengers, Deputy Superintendent of GRP, Khurda Road, Debendra Kumar Das said.
They used daggers and stones to hurt the passengers and decamped with their belongings including cash, Das said.
Two dacoits got down the train near Delanga and attacked one Bhaskar Pradhan of nearby Udayapur village, who was riding a motorbike, apparently to flee with the help of the vehicle. Pradhan sustained serious injuries as they attacked him with a broken liquor bottle.
Six passengers who were injured in the attack in the train got down at Kanasa and lodged a complaint.
The injured have been identified as Pramod Kumar Sahu and Anant Kumar Sahu of Ganjam district, Rajiv Sethi of Kendrapara and Rajkumar Behera, Maimud Shah and Suresh Kumar Prusty of Puri district.
The injured were treated at the government hospital at Delanga and then referred to Bhubaneswar for further check up.
The GRP along with local police led by Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) BB Sahu visited the spot and investigation is in progress, he said, adding, no arrests have been done so far.
