Dalit woman attempts self-immolation for not getting possession of land

A 35-year-old Dalit woman tried to immolate herself in the presence of officials in Uttar Pradesh's Faizabad district on Tuesday, complaining that she had not been given possession of the land allotted to her.

The incident occurred when a 'Tehsil Day' function was in progress at Milkipur, 115 km from Lucknow. Ram Mati poured kerosene and tried to immolate herself, but was stopped by the people, a police officer said.

Sub-divisional magistrate K D Sharma told PTI that Ram Mati had complained to the consolidation department that she had not got possession of the land, allotted to her as she was landless.

The woman's complaint was pending with the department, Sharma said. "We have taken cognizance of her complaint and are trying to solve it."
