After the coverage of the yoga day events, public broadcaster Doordarshan has now focussed on special programmes on Emergency, forty years after it came into effect.
Official sources said that Doordarshan has prepared a comprehensive documentary, audience-based programmes and interviews of various people including political personalities who closely witnessed the events in that period which will be telecast on special slots on DD News from June 23 to 27.
The programmes would reflect the various incidents during that time including the Rajan case in Kerala, the arrests of political leaders, censorship of media and other events during the 21-month period, between 1975 and 1977, when the then Indira Gandhi-led government had declared Emergency, officials said.
Emergency came into effect from June 25, 1975, and was withdrawn on March 21, 1977.
Prasar Bharati chairman A Surya Prakash said the programmes had been prepared with an aim to reinforce the public's committement towards democratic and constitutional values which is the mandate of the public sector broadcaster.
"Having lived through those dark days when democracy was derailed, I believe our effort should be to ensure that it never again happens in India," Prakash said.
Officials said that a special team had been constituted by Doordarshan for these special programmes.
Apart from the special programmes, stories related to the incients during the Emergency period would also be shown during the regular bulletins of DD News, sources said.
