The Haryana government today said Deepti Umashankar, the principal secretary of Sainik and Ardh Sainik Welfare Department, has been given the additional charge of Haryana Staff Selection Commission (HSSC) chairperson.

The move came after HSSC chairperson B B Bharti was suspended on May 17 in the wake of a row that erupted after aspiring junior engineers were asked which one among the following is not a bad omen in Haryana. The options for the answer were: seeing an empty pot, a casket, a black Brahmin, a Brahmin girl.

According to an official release, the state government has also decided to register an FIR against a Delhi-based company which was awarded the contract for setting the question paper, the paper-setter and the publisher.

The state government had also decided to set up a high-level inquiry panel to investigate the matter.
