Former Chairman of the National Commission for Minorities Tarlochan Singh today welcomed the Delhi government's move to constitute an SIT to probe the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.
He, however, suggested Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal to move Supreme Court to constitute the SIT, and "it should be monitored by the apex court."
"We have welcomed the suggestion made by Arvind Kejriwal for constituting the SIT, but he has no power for its formation and it lies with Union Home Minister or Lt Governor of Delhi," Singh told reporters here.
He said the reports of as many as nine Special Investigation Teams (SITs) in the past were yet to be implemented and no action was taken on it.
Referring to Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi's recent remarks on 1984 riots, he said "the debate on anti-Sikh riots has once again begun.
