The Delhi government has sanctioned funds for initiation of pending development works, including construction of roads and drains, in unauthorised colonies in the city.

Work will be undertaken on a war footing and the expenditure to be involved will be between Rs 1,000 and Rs 1,200 crore, a government statement said.

"Good news for those living in hellish conditions in unauthorized colonies. Delhi government has approved and sanctioned budget for construction of road and drains in all pending colonies (barring ASI/forest areas). Work will start soon. This will provide them dignity and better living conditions (sic)," Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal tweeted today.

According to the latest data provided by the Urban Development department, there are 1,797 unauthorised colonies in Delhi and developmental works will immediately be taken up in all of them except for those on ASI or forest land.

Two agencies the Irrigation & Flood Control and the Delhi State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation - are the nodal agencies for carrying out the developmental works in unauthorised colonies of Delhi.
