Muslim leaders of the city Congress, who were unhappy about the selection of Ishwar Makwana as the Congress candidate for Ahmedabad West (SC) seat, have dropped their demand to change the candidate.
The decision came after these leaders, including Dariyapur MLA Gyasuddin Shaikh, municipal councillor Iqbal Shaikh, leader of opposition in the Ahmedabad Municipal Council (AMC) Badruddin Shaikh and others met Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) president Arjun Modhwadia yesterday night.
"We met Arjunbhai yesterday night to resolve the issue. He assured us that the matter has been referred to the high command, but it would be better if the demand is dropped. He said that such a step could trigger a chorus to change candidates in a few more seats, which is not good for the party" Shaikh said.
He was referring to the recent protest by different groups, who protested against Congress candidates for Banaskantha and Kutch (SC).
"Thus, we agreed to go ahead with what the party high command decided. We also assured him that Muslim leaders will work for Makwana without any bias," Shaikh said.
A few days ago, the same Muslim leaders had opposed Ishwar Makwana' s selection, claiming that he is an outsider.
Shaikh had also suggested that Makwana should be replaced by local Dalit leaders like retired IPS officer Rajan Priyadarshi, who joined the Congress after retirement.
