DMK today criticised the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre for opening up over 15 sectors for Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), terming it as "anti-people".
Party president M Karunanidhi also took a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his past criticism of the UPA government in 2012 on the same issue, referring to his tweet then, where he had slammed the Congress on FDI.
"The doors to FDI have now been thrown open in the Modi-led government," he said in party mouthpiece 'Murasoli'.
Karunanidhi recalled that he had earlier opposed the BJP government's decision to increase FDI cap in insurance sector, saying he had then pointed out that BJP, while in opposition, had opposed it.
He had warned the government against any such move as it would be detrimental to the country's economy, he said.
"Unmindful of this, the BJP government is proactively welcoming FDI and repeatedly opening up the economy and this is the latest example of that. DMK opposes this anti-people move," he said.
Pushing ahead with major reforms, the government had on November 10, 2015 relaxed foreign investment rules in 15 sectors including civil aviation, banking, defence, retail and news broadcasting and eased the process for approval of FDI.
