DMK President M Karunanidhi today demanded a detailed probe into the circumstances leading to the collapse of an effluent tank which killed 10 labourers in a tannery near Vellore.
Stating that negligence by the private firm which maintained the tank was said to be the reason for the mishap, he alleged it had been functioning without necessary permission. Also untreated effluent was stored in the tank though it was meant for solid waste.
"On behalf of DMK I condole the demise of the labourers. A detailed probe should be taken up to identify the cause of the incident," he said in a statement here a day after the mishap.
He also urged the Tamil Nadu Government to increase the relief of Rs three lakh, announced by Chief Minister O Panneerselvam, to Rs ten lakh each to the families of the deceased, who included nine from West Bengal.
The tank was part of a Common Effluent Treatment Plant maintained by a private firm which collapsed in Ranipet SIPCOT (State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu) Industrial Complex.
