The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) today said it has seized Myanmar-origin gold, smuggled into the country, in two separate cases in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha.
A total of over 7 kg of the yellow metal was seized and two people, whose identities were not disclosed, were detained.
Acting on a tip-off, 4.65 kg of gold worth Rs 1.43 crore was seized at Nellore railway station in Andhra Pradesh and one passenger was apprehended, the DRI said.
DRI officers at Vijayawada intercepted this passenger who was travelling from Guwahati to Tambaram by Guwahati MS Express last evening.
He was carrying two stoves, which were very heavy. When the officials unscrewed metal plates on the top, they found two semi-circular rods inside, covered in wax. When the wax was removed, the rods were found to be made from gold.
The passenger admitted that the gold had come from Myanmar, the DRI said. The total amount of concealed gold was 4.6 kg, valued at Rs 1.43 crore.
In the second case, DRI officials in Bhubaneshwar intercepted a passenger travelling from Guwahati to Chennai by SRC MAS SF Special Train at Khurda Road station in Odisha last night.
He was found to be carrying Myanmar-marked gold biscuits in the pockets of his inner vest and in his shoes, another DRI release said here.
Fifteen gold biscuits weighing 2.49 kg, worth Rs 76.59 lakh, were recovered from him, it said.
