The consignment imported from African countries and Dubai did not have proper pre-shipment inspection certificates.

The certificates produced for the scrap were manipulated and bogus, DRI sources said, adding that 22 containers were seized in last few days.

The agency has indicated possibility of more such seizures in coming days.

Import of metal scrap is not permitted in India without pre-shipment inspection by an authorised agency certifying that the scrap does not contain any radio-active, war material or explosives, the sources said.
