The Academic Council met in an "emergent" meeting to examine the proposals for the meta university, to introduce two new courses -- Master of Mathematical Education and B Tech in Humanities -- as models for meta-university and meta-college courses, and amendments to the ordinances for Credit Transfer between DU and other institutions.

Over 70 members of the council attended the meeting that lasted for over 5 hours and passed the proposals with six dissents.

The highest decision-making body of the University, the Executive Council, will meet tomorrow to clear the same proposals.

The meta university and meta college have been scheduled to launch from 2012-13 academic session.

Under the project, DU and Jamia Millia Islamia are launching a masters course on Mathematics Education in which the students will be taught a range of subjects apart from Mathematics.

The B Tech in Humanities course, which will be implemented by the Cluster Innovation Centre, is also scheduled to be launched from the next session.

The dissenting teachers said they were upset that the courses were neither discussed in staff councils of the University nor with the committee of courses.

"We protested on procedural issues and structure of courses and syllabus as these courses have far-reaching effects on the future of students and the institutions," said Prof Sheo Dutt, one of the six dissenters. (more)
